What is an onchain collectible and why should I sell one?

An onchain collectible is any form of digital media that you would like to be collected on the blockchain. This is also commonly known as a non-fungible token (NFT).

What does it mean when I put my work onchain?

Going "onchain" is simply part of an ongoing evolution of the Internet we are already familiar with. As the world started getting increasingly online (think anywhere from social media to ecommerce) since the founding of the Internet in the 1980s, we are too now getting progressively onchain. In other words, onchain is the new online

Putting media (such as photos, videos, or documents) onchain means you are recording it on the blockchain, a decentralized public ledger (i.e. book of records) that makes the data recorded on it both secure and immutable. The act of putting your media onchain is also known as minting your work as a non-fungible token (NFT). You can also think of an NFT as a certificate of ownership and authenticity over any creation.

While NFTs often get a bad rep, they are extremely valuable to creators as they provide record and attribution of your work (otherwise known as provenance) that essentially live on forever, long after your career and no matter how many times your work changes hands. Having provenance over your work is especially important in a time where artifical intelligence (AI) is rapidly growing in adoption, and will eventually allow you to have greater control over how your content is being used and referenced.

What are the benefits of putting my work onchain?

Putting your work onchain offers you a number of benefits, especially if your work is digital in nature. By putting your work onchain, you:

  • Create a permanent record of your artwork, which you will be able to refer to in the event of any copyright or intellectual property dispute.
  • Can see who owns your work at any one point in time, even if your work were to change hands.
  • Can reach and monetize new audiences spanning geographies, without having to depend on middlemen.
  • Make your work available to a completely new audience of digital art collectors who are looking to grow their collection onchain.
